If you want the most cushion and a cover you can throw in the wash, start with ViscoSoft’s Climate. It’s 4 inches of memory foam with a copper-infused top layer and a zip-off cooling cover. Layla’s Memory Foam Topper uses copper-gel-infused foam too, but at 2 inches and 15 pounds in Queen it’s the lighter, lower-profile option. If you’d rather sleep on latex, Sleep On Latex’s Pure Green is bare natural latex in three thicknesses and three firmness levels, and Avocado’s Eco Organic topper comes with an organic cotton cover already sewn on.
Nobody at Sound Sleep Gear has slept on these toppers. This list compares what each maker publishes about materials, size, care and fit, and every cooling claim below is the maker’s own.

Topper or cooling pad?
A topper changes how the bed feels; a pad mostly changes the surface you lie on. Our cooling mattress pad vs mattress topper guide boils it down to one question: if heat is the main complaint, look at a pad, and if the mattress also feels too firm, a topper does more. Every topper linked below is at least 2 inches of foam or latex, so it will change the feel of your bed as well as its surface.
The picks
ViscoSoft Climate: best thick topper with a washable cover
ViscoSoft’s Climate, which Amazon lists as the ViscoSoft Active Cooling 4 Inch topper, is a dual-layer design: 2 inches of copper-infused memory foam on top of 2 inches of high-density structural memory foam. ViscoSoft says the copper-infused gel memory foam “draws excess heat away from your pressure points” and that ventilated channels cycle air through the core. It also says the cover’s phase-changing yarns adapt to the room’s temperature and give a cool-to-the-touch feel.
The cover is removable and machine washable, and it arrives already fitted to the foam. To clean it, ViscoSoft says to unzip the cover and machine wash it; the foam itself shouldn’t be washed. Adjustable elastic straps and an anti-slip mesh bottom hold the topper on the mattress. The foam is made in the USA and certified to CertiPUR-US. Because it adds 4 inches of height, ViscoSoft says to plan on deep-pocket fitted sheets.
That height is the trade-off. A 4-inch topper takes over the feel of the bed, so it suits a firm, even mattress better than a soft one; our memory foam topper buying guide covers how thickness changes the bed.

Layla Memory Foam Topper: best thinner memory foam topper
Layla’s topper is 2 inches of 2.5-pound-density copper-gel-infused memory foam. Layla says the copper-gel microbeads compress together under your body to move heat away from you, and that breathable fabric and open-cell technology enhance airflow to reduce heat retention. The cover is 81% polyester, 18% viscose and 1% spandex, with raised hexagon stitching that Layla says aids airflow, and it zips off for laundering.
The foam itself is spot clean only: Layla says to use a mild detergent and a damp cloth, let it air dry, and not to machine wash or submerge it. Elastic bands on all four corners hold the topper in place. The Queen measures 60 by 80 by 2 inches and weighs 15 pounds, the foams are CertiPUR-US certified, and Layla lists the topper as compatible with adjustable bases.

Sleep On Latex Pure Green: best bare latex topper
Sleep On Latex cuts the Pure Green from solid sheets of natural latex foam, made with latex from organically grown rubber trees in Sri Lanka and certified organic to GOLS. The foam is made with what the company calls an enhanced Dunlop process, which it says gives a livelier, more consistent feel than other Dunlop latex without Talalay’s bounce. Sleep On Latex says the foam’s open-cell structure keeps it from retaining excess body heat, and it calls the topper a breathable sleeping surface.
You choose 1, 2 or 3 inches and soft, medium or firm, and Sleep On Latex publishes a density and firmness rating for each level. Soft, its most popular firmness, is 4.0 pounds per cubic foot with a 25% IFD of 20 lbf; medium is 4.7 pounds and 34 lbf; firm is 5.9 pounds and 46 lbf. It calls 2 inches its most popular thickness. The link below is the soft, 2-inch Queen.
The topper ships without a cover. Sleep On Latex sells optional organic cotton covers and says a fitted sheet can cover the topper too. The latex can be spot cleaned with a mild detergent and water, and the company recommends keeping it covered in use and storage so the foam doesn’t degrade. Its product page doesn’t list straps or a grip base. The foam is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100.

Avocado Eco Organic: best latex topper with a cover included
Avocado sells its Eco Organic topper in 2 or 3 inches and two feels. Medium uses GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex; Plush uses softer FSC-certified Pure Talalay latex, which Avocado suggests for side and combination sleepers. Avocado says latex is naturally breathable and sleeps cooler than memory foam, and that Talalay’s production process makes a lighter, more breathable latex. The link below is the Plush 3-inch Queen, which Avocado lists at 80 by 60 by 3 inches and 32 pounds.
The cover is 97% GOTS-certified organic cotton and 3% elastane, and it’s sewn shut by design, with no zipper. An organic cotton canvas base keeps the topper from slipping on the mattress. Care is spot cleaning with natural cleaners, no machine washing, and Avocado recommends an organic mattress protector on top. Avocado says its OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I certification covers the entire topper, and it lists GREENGUARD Gold certification.
How to choose a cooling mattress topper
Choose foam or latex first. ViscoSoft and Layla are memory foam, and both rest their cooling claims on copper infused in the foam. Sleep On Latex and Avocado are latex, and both rest theirs on latex’s open-cell structure. Our memory foam vs latex comparison explains why feel matters as much as the cooling label. None of the four claims is a measurement on your bed.
Pick a thickness. Sleep On Latex says a 2-inch topper makes a moderate change and a 3-inch topper a significant one, and Avocado calls its 3-inch the more transformative upgrade. ViscoSoft’s 4 inches adds the most height and needs deep-pocket sheets.
Decide how you’ll keep it clean. ViscoSoft and Layla covers come off for washing. Avocado’s cover is sewn on and spot clean only, so a mattress protector on top does the washable work. Pure Green comes bare unless you buy a cover.
Check the weight and fit. The Queen Avocado Plush 3-inch is listed at 32 pounds, more than twice the 15-pound Layla Queen, which matters when you rotate it or change sheets. Straps, bands or a grip base keep a topper from sliding; Pure Green lists none of those.
If the heat still wins, the surface layer may be the problem: our best cooling sheets compare four sheet sets by fiber and weave.
FAQ
Do cooling mattress toppers actually keep you cool?
Each maker here claims a cooling mechanism. ViscoSoft and Layla point to copper infused in the memory foam, and the two latex makers point to latex’s open-cell structure. Those are maker claims, not measurements, and how warm you sleep also depends on the room, your sheets and what’s on top of you.
Is latex cooler than memory foam?
Avocado says latex is naturally breathable and sleeps cooler than memory foam, and Sleep On Latex says its foam’s open-cell structure keeps it from retaining excess body heat. Layla, a memory foam maker, says open-cell technology and breathable fabric enhance airflow in its topper. None of these is a measured comparison.
Can you wash a mattress topper?
Not the foam or latex itself. ViscoSoft and Layla make covers you can take off and wash, and both say to keep the foam out of the washer. Avocado’s cover is sewn shut, so it’s spot clean only. Sleep On Latex sells its topper bare, with optional covers you can wash.
How thick should a cooling topper be?
Sleep On Latex says a 2-inch topper makes a moderate change and a 3-inch topper a significant one, and Avocado calls its 3-inch the more transformative upgrade. ViscoSoft’s 4-inch topper adds the most height, and ViscoSoft says to plan on deep-pocket fitted sheets.
