If you want the simplest machine that just works, start with the Yogasleep Dohm Classic, a real fan in a tuned housing with two speeds and a twist-to-adjust tone, and no app or screen. If you want to schedule it or change the level from bed, the SNOOZ Pro is the app-controlled real fan. The Dohm Nova adds a built-in timer and night light to the Dohm sound, the LectroFan EVO offers 22 digital fan and noise sounds, and the Yogasleep Rohm+ is the battery-powered pick for travel.
This list compares what each maker publishes. Nobody at Sound Sleep Gear has listened to, measured or slept with these machines.

Real fan or digital?
The biggest choice is the sound source. Yogasleep and SNOOZ machines generate sound with a real fan motor inside the housing. Yogasleep describes the Dohm sound as “not a recording,” and SNOOZ says the Pro “uses a real internal fan to produce natural, non-looping white noise.” You shape that one sound with speed, tone and volume.
Digital machines play generated sounds through a speaker, which is how the LectroFan EVO offers 22 sounds, from brown and pink noise to ten fan styles and two ocean sounds. If you don’t yet know which sound suits you, a digital machine lets you try several. If you already know a fan works for you, a real-fan machine keeps it simple. Our analog vs digital sound machine guide walks through that decision, and the brown vs white noise comparison covers noise colors.
The picks
Yogasleep Dohm Classic: best simple real-fan machine
Yogasleep calls the Dohm Classic its original fan-based machine and says it is assembled in the USA. A real fan motor produces the sound, with two speed settings. Rotating the outer cap changes the volume, and rotating the inner collar shifts the tone from a lower hum to a brighter rush of air. It plugs into the wall, with no app, charging or screen.
Yogasleep lists it at 5.6 x 5.6 x 3.5 inches and 31.5 ounces, with a 1-year limited warranty. It has no timer. Yogasleep sells it in white, gray, black, tan and pink; the link below is the black model.

SNOOZ Pro: best app-controlled real fan
SNOOZ Pro also uses a real fan, and SNOOZ calls it its latest fan-based white noise machine. It has a tone control knob and 10 volume levels, and the free, optional app adds a scheduler with fade in and fade out plus remote control. SNOOZ says the app has no subscription. A travel case comes in the box.
SNOOZ publishes a volume range of 46 to 87 dBA, measured at the device; the other makers here don’t list one on the pages we checked. The unit measures 5.8 x 5.8 x 3.2 inches and weighs 1.2 pounds, with a 6-foot cord.
Yogasleep Dohm Nova: best with a timer and night light
Dohm Nova keeps the real fan motor and adds what the Classic lacks: 10 fan speeds, an adjustable amber night light and an optional sleep timer set to 45 minutes, 90 minutes or 8 hours. Yogasleep also gives it a removable, machine-washable fabric cover. It measures 5.6 x 5.6 x 3.7 inches and weighs 18 ounces.
Our LectroFan EVO vs Dohm Nova comparison sets the two side by side.

LectroFan EVO: best for sound variety
The LectroFan EVO’s manual lists 12 noises, running from brown noise through pink to pure white plus two ocean sounds, and 10 fan sounds, from a large fan to an oscillating fan. The maker calls all 22 non-looping. It remembers your last noise and fan setting when you turn it off with the power button.
The timer adds an hour with each tap, up to eight hours. A 3.5 mm output sends sound to headphones, a pillow speaker or a portable speaker, and the built-in speaker turns off when one is connected. Power comes through a USB cable with the included AC adapter. Our LectroFan EVO review covers its controls in detail.

Yogasleep Rohm+: best for travel
Rohm+ is a portable machine with 20 built-in sounds, including white, brown and pink noise, fan and nature sounds, and a Bluetooth speaker for streaming your own audio. Yogasleep rates the battery at up to 20 hours per charge, and it charges by USB or on a wireless charging pad. The exterior is water- and dust-resistant, and it has a strap for hanging it from luggage or a bed frame. The timer offers 45 minutes, 90 minutes or 8 hours.
It measures 1.4 x 3.4 x 6.5 inches and weighs 6 ounces.
How to choose
Decide between one sound and many. Real-fan machines give one sound that you shape. Digital machines give a menu. If a box fan has always worked for you, a real-fan machine such as a Dohm or SNOOZ is the closest match here.
Decide on a timer. If you want sound only while falling asleep, Dohm Nova, Rohm+ and the LectroFan EVO have built-in timers, and SNOOZ Pro schedules through its app. The Dohm Classic has none, which suits all-night use.
Check the power. The Dohm models and SNOOZ Pro plug into the wall. The LectroFan EVO runs from USB power and needs a power source to operate. Only the Rohm+ runs from a battery.
Set the volume with your hearing in mind. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure, while long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause it. SNOOZ’s published range tops out at 87 dBA measured at the device, so use the lowest setting that covers the noise and don’t place a machine right beside your head. LectroFan’s manual adds that you should keep the volume comfortable when using headphones or earbuds.
Remember what masking can’t do. A sound machine covers noise rather than removing it. If you want less sound reaching your ears instead, see our best earplugs for sleeping .
FAQ
Is a real-fan machine better than a digital one?
Neither is better for everyone. A real fan gives one sound you shape with speed and tone, while a digital machine such as the LectroFan EVO lets you step through many fan and noise sounds. Pick by whether you want one sound or a choice.
How loud should a white noise machine be?
Use the lowest level that covers the noise. NIDCD says sounds at or below 70 dBA are unlikely to cause hearing loss even after long exposure, while long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause it.
Do I need a timer?
Only if you want sound while falling asleep and quiet later. Dohm Nova and Rohm+ offer 45-minute, 90-minute and 8-hour settings, LectroFan EVO sets 1 to 8 hours, and SNOOZ Pro schedules through its app.
